My name is Sam Menchyk and I developed this site to be an all in one resource for The Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath.
My first ride on this excellent trail system was in the spring of 1998. My wife, Jane, and I took a self-contained trip from Pittsburgh to Washington D.C. We were instantly hooked. While preparing for that trip, we found it fairly difficult to find resources on camping gear, riding gear, tires, maps, directions, water and all of the other things that go into planning an end to end trip.
To ease my future planning tasks and, also, to help first time thru-trippers I thought that this all in one resource would be very helpful. No matter whether you are a first time rider, a seasoned thru-tripper or just a casual day rider, your input on this website is extremely valuable. I am only 1 person with 1 perspective and I encourage you all to join into the community of folks that help build, sustain and enjoy this remarkable trail system.
Thank you for stopping by my site and I am looking forward to hearing all of the great ideas and tips you all have to offer
The C&O Canal Towpath
185 Miles of Adventure!
Preserving America’s early transportation history, the C&O Canal began as a dream of passage to Western wealth. Operating for nearly 100 years the canal was a lifeline for communities along the Potomac River as coal, lumber and agricultural products floated down the waterway to market. Today it endures as a pathway for discovering historical, natural and recreational treasures!
The Great Allegheny Passage
150 Miles of Adventure!
The Great Allegheny Passage is a 150-mile biking and walking trail from Cumberland, Maryland to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The GAP is complete from Cumberland, where it links up with the C&O Canal Towpath, to McKeesport. Work is progressing on the connection between Pittsburgh and McKeesport.
